48" ducting still running five years on

Client

Year

Type
Large-scale ducting
Project no.

Description

48-inch pipes — 1,219 mm, wider than a doorway — built from mitred sections and full-penetration welds for the overhaul of Thickener 8 on Line 1 at Laguna Seca.

The scope combines a special elbow with a manhole, three 90° 1.5D elbows, 18 metres of API 5L-B pipe and the AWWA C207 Class D backing flanges, plus the line's supports and clamps. Every mitre was developed on the 3D model so the welds closed first time and the assembly followed the routing approved by the client.

As with any piece this size, the challenge does not end in the workshop: the line was split into three sections — one of them to be welded on site — and we designed transport cradles and dedicated frames for the elbows, so every component travelled to site as an oversize load without compromising geometry or coating.

The structure was installed in 2021 and is still running without trouble — the best proof of welding and engineering done right.
