From point cloud to reality

One duct, three stages: scan, model and finished piece.

The whole sequence in a single shot: from the digital survey as a point cloud, to the 3D engineering model, to the real piece hanging from the overhead crane in our workshop. Same framing in all three stages.

Silent looping video: the laser-scanned point cloud of the 60-inch connection duct solidifies into the 3D CAD model on its yellow transport frame and then becomes the real fabricated piece, hanging from the overhead crane in the CGK workshop.
Description

A reservoir-type tank and its 60-inch connection duct: two pieces that had to fit each other and, on top of that, fit on a truck bound for the mine.

The scope began with 3D modelling of the complete assembly: tank, duct and the interfaces between them. The model produced the fabrication drawings and the design of the dedicated transport frame that moves the component to the mine within transport dimensions.

The piece was not simply delivered welded: it was certified with a load test, checking in the physical world what engineering had calculated on screen. The Y-shaped duct — with its top flange and header end — travelled on its purpose-built yellow frame.

The slider above shows the full transition: the geometry captured as a point cloud, the engineering CAD model and the real piece hanging from the overhead crane in our Antofagasta workshop.
