The bucket on a Caterpillar 994H loader eats steel from the first shift. By the time it reaches the workshop, welding on a patch is no longer enough: it has to be scanned, compared against the model and brought back to its original geometry, piece by piece.
Minera Centinela sent us four units. The initial inspection found what you would expect and then some: the lip with a longitudinal crack running end to end, the floor base plate deformed and a heel liner that someone had previously repaired with three plates welded together. We rebuilt that one as a single liner, to our standard.
Material is not picked from a catalogue. The liners are 25 mm Hardox 450, where abrasion rules. The lip, the floor base plate and the heel pad holders are Strenx 700, where load rules: the lip alone measures 5,650 × 1,000 × 100 mm and the base plate weighs 2,125 kg.
Every fit is validated against the point cloud before cutting plate. It is the only way a five-and-a-half-metre piece goes in first time and the bucket returns to site with the geometry it left the factory with, not the one the mine gave it.
